     Run, Hide, Fight® is utilized by many colleges and universities in the United States. And many universities have done an excellent job at producing their own active shooter videos specifically for their individual campus and most of these videos can be found on YouTube. The Ohio State University, Northwestern University, Florida State University, and Oakland University Police Department utilize the Run. Hide. Fight. method for active shooter and all have videos worth watching.

Active Shooter Incidents in the United States 2020

The FBI has designated 40 shootings in 2020 as active shooter incidents. The 40 active shooter incidents happened across 19 states and killed 38 people.  Another 126 were wounded. The FBI defines an active shooter as one or more individuals actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area.

Active Shooter Incidents in the United States 2021

The FBI has designated 61 shootings in 2021 as active shooter incidents.

This an increase over the same type of shootings in 2020. The number of incidents has nearly doubled since in 2017.

The 61 active shooter incidents happened across 30 states and killed 103 people. Another 140 people were injured in active shooter shootings during 2021. 

During 2021, active shooters targeted multiple locations. The shootings may have happened in one day, or over several days. Many shootings happening on Saturdays between the hours of 12 p.m. and 6 p.m.

11/5/2018

San Rafael, CA

One person was killed, and one person was wounded.  Shooter was apprehended by law enforcement during vehicle pursuit.


11/19/2018

Chicago, IL

Three people were killed but nobody was wounded.  This incident started as a domestic dispute. The shooter was shot and wounded by law enforcement, but ultimately committed suicide.


2/19/2019

West Palm Beach, FL

Nobody was killed in this incident.  A doctor and emergency room employee wrestled the gun away from the shooter and were wounded by the shooter.  The shooter was restrained by hospital staff and a patient.


8/12/2019

Chicago, IL

Nobody was killed or wounded in this incident.  Shooter was apprehended by law enforcement at the scene.


2/9/2021

Buffalo, MN

Shooter was 67 years old.  There were 4 IED's planted at the scene, but only 2 actually detonated.  One person was killed and four people were wounded.  The shooter was apprehended at the scene by law enforcement.


6/1/2022

Tulas, OK

 The gunman who killed four people at a Oklahoma medical building  had been a surgery patient of one of victims.  Shooter parked his car in an adjoining garage, then went through unlocked doors into the medical building.

According to the FBI Statistics in 2020 one active shooter wore body armor.  In 2021 two shooters wore body armor.

In the book "Functional Emergency Preparedness" I recommend an LTCF ensure that first responders have access cards and master keys for all buildings.  

Uvalde school police chief said he tried at least 26 keys to the room where the shooter was, but none worked
